Riley Lee's recent visit to the San Francisco Bay Area was a wonderful
success, and I want to thank everyone who participated and helped make his
first encounter with us so memorable. His only regret was not having more
time to spend with us all. There is already talk of him returning next May
or June, so continue practicing hard.
For those who missed it, in the less than three days he was here, Riley
gave 16 individual 1-hour lessons, a stimulating three-hour master class /
breathing workshop on Thursday evening, and an intensely inspiring
performance at the Clarion Music Center on Friday night. He proved himself
to be a truly impeccable teacher and masterful player, and I feel so
fortunate that I had the honor to participate. I hope everyone is as
satisfied with his visit as I am.
Special thanks go to Nik and Sally Warren, Robert and Diana Kehlmann, and
Karl and Sue Young for sharing their homes with Riley and his band of
students. Also thanks to Phil Gelb for being the focus student at
Thursday's master class and to Ron Nelson for all his help, especially for
all his driving (even though he loves to drive).
I hope everyone takes to heart what Riley said repeatedly--we're much
better player than we think we are; we just need to discover this through
practice.
Best wishes,
Michael
