I think it is a metaphysical question. If there is the concept of
a particular type of flute, let's call it a Shakuhachi for convenience's
sake, what does that concept entail? If we then describe that concept
we will build up a common language, as well as creating a blueprint for
constructing the instrument.
Examples:
o it is a tube open at both ends
o it has 4 holes on one side, and 1 on the other
o the side with holes could be known as the front, and
the 1 hole side as the back
o it has an angled edge at one end, known as an utaguchi
o that end could be called the utaguchi end, or the mouth piece end
o the holes need to be closed completely or partly for different
note production
o thus it needs to be possible to close a hole completely
