i've always thought of it as great fortune that i live within
the broadcast range of the new york city FM radio station WKCR.
being a long time jazz aficionado i am especially drawn to the
"birthday broadcasts" where, 12 times a year, the music of one
jazz great is featured for 24 hours non-stop. well, one more
revolution via the world wide web. anyone with a web browser
that has the real player plug-in can go to:
http://www.columbia.edu/cu/wkcr
click on the image of the microphone and BINGO! you will
be able to hear "live from new york" whatever is currently
being broadcast. tonight starting at midnight (new york time)
for 24 hours we get the sound of the great "lady day" on
the billie holiday birthday broadcast. (for those that
may have missed it, it is her image that is part of the
background graphic for the beginning page of the
World Shakuhachi Festival 98 photographs on display at
http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Garden/2069/ )
i know it's pretty late notice and some who might be interested
in catching this activity may miss it. but these birthday broadcasts
happen 12 times a year so if not this one, there will be many more.
the above URL has a link to http://www.columbia.edu/cu/wkcr/comingup.html
which lists upcoming events. (charles mingus on april 22nd
and duke ellington on April 29th.) and for you charlie parker
fans, weekdays from 8:20 to 9:00am (new york time) there's
a program called "Bird Flight" which for many years has
featured the music of charlie parker, a personal musical hero
of mine. for you that don't know about charlie parker in
particular or the only native american art form (called "jazz")
and while not a station exclusively dedicated to jazz, they
have a heavy dose of regularly scheduled broadcasts featuring
"the music." so day! hey! check it out. courtesy of the world wide web.
birth of the cool (part II)? way to go. way to go.
