Dear List,
In my overly fervent enthusiasm in shakuhachi, I failed to acknowlege and
respect sufficiently another great tradition of Japanese music, the
Shamisen, (in my update #2). Yes, this is a shakuhachi list, and I admit my
ignorance of the shamisen tradition, but I must be careful...A list member
kindly gave me some great information about Shamisen which I will impart to
you:
"Nagauta" is only for background music of Kabuki. What plays with koto and
shakuhachi is "Jiuta". Shamisen music is unimaginably deep.
Each Japanese traditional theatrical art each has its own Shamisen
music:
Kabuki
Nagauta, Jyoruri(Kiyomoto, Tokiwazu)
Ningyo Jyoruri(Puppet show)
Jyoruri(Gidayu)
Noh
Utai, Yohkyoku
Not only above, there are lots of Shamisen music such as Kouta,
Dodoitsu and Minyo(including Tsugaru Jamisen).
All great things to you,
Al

"There is something deeper if you would go deeper,
if you go to the source of where the music is being
made, you'll find something more interesting. At the
source, everyone's individual music is made. If you
ask what that deep place is, it's your own life and
it's knowing your own life, that own way that you
live."
