"REIBO" WORKSHOP

Shakuhachi Grand Master Riley Lee will offer a two-day workshop on the
honkyoku piece "Reibo" in Berkeley on October 14 (Saturday) and October 15
(Sunday) from 2pm-5pm.

This workshop is suitable for both beginners and advanced players. Riley
will teach the version of "Reibo" taught to him by Yokoyama Katsuya, and
the sheet music written by Furuya Terao will be provided.

The term "Reibo" [translated: "Yearning for the Bell"] is found in many
pieces in the shakuhachi honkyoku tradition. Riley's 1993 Ph.D.
dissertation for the University of Sydney, entitled "Yearning for the
Bell", focused on the transmission of "Reibo" pieces and analyzed these
pieces as played by various performers. This is an unique opportunity to
learn about this subject from one of the foremost experts.

Location: Home of Prof. Robin Hartshorne, 768 Contra Costa Ave., Berkeley
Cost: $35 for both days; $20 for one day only.

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the workshops or if
you are interested in attending (mailto: indus1@uclink4.berkeley.edu).

Best wishes,
Michael
