Hi Reg,
I don't know of any Meian players in Kochi; you are right in that
there are some teachers of the Myoan style in Kagawa ken. I was returning
from a Yokoyama Katsuya workshop a year ago on the train with one player
who said his teacher was a Meian player in Kagawa ken (Takamatsu?) but I
don't remember either players' name. There is a minyo group in Kochi which
does have shakuhachi accompaniment and there is one coffee shop a friend
once invited me to where a minyo shakuhachi player was practicing with
minyo singers. I can try and find the place again and see if it is a
regular thing, maybe I can find out what days of the month they practice
there if you are interested. The minyo that you hear in Kochi, however,
for the most part is not native to the Kochi area; most minyo I have heard
performed is music from Tohoku or other areas of Japan. We do have the
song Yosakoi Bushi but other than that, there doesn't seem to be much of a
minyo tradition originating from Kochi prefecture.
Cheers,
Dan
