I am surprised at this. Most of the music lists I subscribe to are full of
nothing but discussion of the tragedy, its aftermath, and possible US
reaction. Interestingly, though several of these lists have brought out lots
of disagreement and energetic discussion, the only ones that seem to have
brought out venom and rancor are the shakuhachi list and the John Cage list!
There is some cosmic irony at work here.

The past week has been incredibly intense for many of us; many of us know
people who have been touched directly by the tragedy. And many of us, too,
have Arab-American friends who are now experiencing great difficulties in
the poisoned atmosphere following the attack. It seems only natural to me
that some of us feel impelled to reach out to WHATEVER COMMUNITIES WE CAN to
try to work through the pain and the politics.

I recognize that some may see targeted lists like the shakuhachi list as
potential refuges from the bombardment of media images etc. But
realistically, there may be no escaping online from this one. This is not
just Prince Charles and Prince Di getting married or PeeWee Herman taking a
solo in a dark movie theater. The internet, with ALL its various
communities, is very much the new village square where people meet to
discuss, cry, and console. I'm not saying the shakuhachi list SHOULD or
SHOULDN'T take on this new function during these times, I am simply pointing
to a reality. And for those who don't want this from the shakuhachi list,
there are several options:

1. It takes only a moment to see whether a message is about how to blow a RO
or how to go to bat for Arab Americans. And then it only takes another
second to hit the delete key. (I delete over 100 emails a day without
reading them, though I keep telling myself that one of these days I might
actually take a very quick look at one of those "ENLARGE YOUR PENIS!"
messages.)

2. Most email programs allow filtering of messages based on subject lines,
sender, etc. You might want to use a filter temporarily, until you're sure
the shakuhachi list is back to strict on-topic discussions. (It's so
convenient that the word "Phil" will effectively get rid of both Gelb and
me!)

3. It is quite possible to quit the list quietly and gracefully without a
lot of hoopla and finger-pointing, and without even pointing out that you're
leaving. It is also very easy to rejoin later at any time. I think "huffing"
only adds to the perceived problem of off-topicness and creates a tenser
atmosphere than necessary.

Well, enough meta-discussion for now. May all our RO's be uncursed forever!

Phil.
