I guess I'm lucky in that I actually enjoy sitting in seiza (or in full
lotus) for long periods of time. I think some peoples' bodies adjust to it
while others seem to view/experience it as a kind of torture ... as Zachary
said, however, seiza does lend a certain solemnity whereas sitting in a
chair in hakama/haori perhaps doesn't. In my iaido classes we used to
spend an hour and a half on our knees on wood floors at every practice
session, as most of the beginning kata were done from kneeling
position...even for someone who didn't mind seiza it did tend to get to my
knees after a while. After a couple of years I finally broke down and
bought some knee pads...
