Well contrary to everybody else I sound great at any temperature (sorry,
couldn't resist). Seriously though I did have kind of an odd observation
(no surprise !) re. the question of whether it's the flute or the player
that actually warms up. My typical pattern is to play my 2.4 for a while
then my 1.8. I notice that I seem to get a richer tone on the 1.8 when I
first pick it up after having played the 2.4 for a while than when I
first pick it up without having played the 2.4 first. This suggests, in
my case anyway, that there's a distinct physiological component in there
somewhere. It's sort of interesting that "warming up" is to some degree
supposed to be getting player and flute synched but the above effect
isn't related to that (unless my 2.4 and 1.8 are exhibiting nonlocal
quantum effects !). Maybe the effect is just the result of having
cleared some gunk out of the respiratory system by playing the 2.4
first.

Also, I second Brett's nomination of green tea as the elixir of life; I
also have a serious green tea habit and I'd swear I play better when
I've had my tea as opposed to when I've been denied it (though again
perhaps the effect is mere sludge removal)
