First things first: I promise that this is my last email on this topic.

I have received a few more 'off the record' emails in addition to the
publicly voiced opinions that we have all had the pleasure to receive.

In short- there is a clear difference of opinion on this issue. There are
voices of note who claim that the higher end prices for flutes are strictly
for historical / cultural reasons - and, to a certain extent, just plain
hype. These people claim that the amazing sounds that come out of the
'super flutes' are really the product of the magnificant lips blowing and
not of the flute.

But this camp does seem to be in the minority. Most people seem to claim,
that, assuming you get a fair and competent evaluation of the flute's
quality, that you get what you pay for. In other words - the second, larger
camp claims that there are flutes out there so wonderful in their SOUND that
they justify the five figure price tags.

My apologies to those exhausted by this topic. I am going to spend the rest
of the evening drinking cheap wine.
