Just to further confuse the issue... some Shakuhachi have been made using
bamboo stock but the bore design inside is cast from epoxy resins...they
sound just great and the bamboo resonates in your hand just like a
traditionally made Shakuhachi.

Another point here is that the bore design of most modern Shakuhachi has at
least some, usually a lot, of filler in it. This filling is necessary to
make a good bore design inside the bamboo tube. The filler , called 'ji',
is traditionally made with raw lacquer mixed with a very fine powdered soft
stone called tonoko and water to encourage the cure of the lacquer. So the
actual bore material is rarely bamboo, though ji-nashi flutes with no filler
are sought after by players.

Keep blowing those 'Ro's'.

Bill O'Connor.
