Tony,

Please don't feel that you need to be good before you take a =
lesson. It's perfectly fine to blow nothing but air at first, even in a =
group or privately with Ronnie. It took me a long time to be able to =
play with any kind of consistency at all. (One day I thought I could =
play, and the next nothing would work right. It's a process that takes =
time, and I'm not sure what I'm doing different today, except that now I =
play better.)
Ronnie always told us not to worry about the sound at first - it =
will come eventually. Kurahashi Yoshio says the same thing. In every =
class, there are various levels of ability to produce a good sound, and =
everybody accepts it in stride. =20
I've always felt comfortable being a beginner with Ronnie and with =
all the other students in the Philadelphia dojo. They all know how =
difficult it is to play this instrument and Ronnie especially is a very =
supportive and understanding teacher. So if you have the opportunity, =
jump right in.

I just found out yesterday Ronnie Nyogetsu Seldin gives lesson here in =
Baltimore and I was invited to observe. I know I would need tons of =
practice before I could dare join in, especially in a group setting. I =
guess this is every beginners lament. I have ordered a playing guide so =
I can learn to correct way to do things, a first for me. I have dabbled =
in music for years but always self taught. This list has inspired to =
really learn.

  Best,
  Tony
