Shakuhachi size

        Hi all,

        A couple of questions...

In several sites is stated that the name of the shakuhachi is
related to its lenght, 1.8 feet. Did Japan developed also a measuring
system based on feets, as in Britain? Coming from a 'metric' country, the
history of 'feet' system is obscure to me.

Also, was the original or more common size 1.8? Since the komuso
were at some point mostly former samurai maybe they adapted the lenght if
it to the size of a kodachi, short sword. Maybe is just coincidence.
Could someone send the complete reference of the thesis devoted to the
komuso?

        All the best,

                Andres
