Jonathon,

I've taken my flutes onboard for six cross-country trips in the last year.
Only once, in Denver, an airlines person at the last door asked me about them
and wanted to see them. Turns out that he was Native American, and we got
into a great conversation about spirituality and flute playing. Once
before, in 1994, after a recent Gulf War flare-up, a man at the x-ray
machines wanted to see the flutes, saying that they could be a weapon. I
asked if I could show him what they looked like and he nodded. I always
carry a CD of shakuhachi (with a nice picture of a komuso monk playing
honkyoku) in the flute bag, and one Kinko score. So I blew some notes,
showed him the music and CD, we smiled and that was that. In such situations
I don't talk about how the ronin used the shakuhachi as a weapon. :-)

Peace,
Jonas
