Here's a picture of how I store mine, using a damp sponge(s) as a dampit.

I used to oil, but gave it up, and so far, so good.
If the bore is lacquered, I don't think the oil will be absorbed. If you oil
the outside, it will limit the moisture absorption from the dampit, which I
think is more important.
If you decide to oil, the next question is what kind of oil is best.
