Being a complete novice, and a beginner to boot, I hesitate to enter the
fray.
I have recently made several bamboo hochiku without anything inside and I
must say that the bamboo without taper holds pitch in the upper range very
well with only the irregularities inherent in the bore. The combination of
aspect ratio and the mentioned irregularities seem to be the correct one. The
tone is not harsh, being very "wooden", and is bright without being brassy.
I have also made a couple PVC shaku that sound softer and more "wooden"
because of the aspect ratio. (Thanks Nelson!)
Just a beginner.
