I just wanted to air my thought that Nelson is one of the most valuable
contributors to this list. There is a risk of falling into un-rigorous
thinking, especially in areas such as music and spirituality. If you can't
fully explain a position, maybe the position is not as solid as you thought.
Nelson is great about encouraging more rigorous thinking (even when I
don't necessarily agree with everything he says).
Another thing I have noticed -- I would like to do an experiment (with
Riley's cooperation). I'd love Riley to post an e-mail under a different
name. We could then see if we are all listening to the message, or merely
listening to the identity of the speaker. Changing (a little) Marshal
McLuhan's message: The Medium is not the Message, the Identity of the
Speaker is the Message. I'd like to reach the point that the Message is the
Message.
Thanks.

Here, Here, Nelson. Now is not the time to sleep!
Quite often, when discussions about suizen vs music comes up, or any
discussion about the "spiritual" aspects of playing shakuhachi comes up,
things stop short of really explaining the spiritual aspects of shakuhachi.
Now is another opportunity to further explain it, or at least discuss it
seriously.
Thanks for persisting with Riley to go deeper into this issue. I, for one,
am very intersected in this thread and am eager for further expansion and
clarity.
