Announcement for Japanese Music Recital

A koto, shamisen and shakuhachi recital will be held on April 12 and 13,
 2003. The koto and shamisen will be played, respectively, by Chieko =
Iwazaki
and Mieko Yamamoto. The shakuhachi is played by Masahiro Nishihama. They =
will be
playing Japanese pieces from the classical period to the modern. One of =
the
pieces, composed in the Edo era, features the koto, shamisen and =
shakuhachi. The
shamisen player will also sing. One classical piece is a shakuhachi =
solo. Other
modern pieces will include "Aika (song of endless travel and sad =
feeling)",
"Yukage-no-uta (poem of evening describing a scene in the countryside in
changing light)" and others. Aika is played by a 17 stringed bass koto =
and
shakuhachi. The performance on April 12th starts at 7 pm at the Potomac
Community Center, 11315 Falls Road, Potomac, Maryland (301) 983-4471. =
The
performance on the 13th starts at 3 pm at the Lyceum, 201 S. Washington =
Street,
Alexandria, Virginia (703) 838-4994. Two koto and shamisen players from =
Japan
are coming to Washington area for the recital. Both recitals are free.
