I think that pitch, tone quality, and following the other forms of
honkyoku are necessary for suizen just as good posture and alignment
are necessary for zazen. You can "practice" anytime, any place,
and via any activity, but the aforementioned aspects of za/suizen
provide centers around which one can organize a practice, and
therefore better accomplish one.
