Yes, the two black lacquered shakuhachis I've seen were both two piece
flutes. My friend's flute has quite a thick black covering, very plastic
like, as you said, urushi being a natural plastic, and the inside is
lacquered a bright red. That flute was never treated with any special
care; Kei just seemed to leave it lying around open to the elements with no
protection but it developed no cracks over the seven or eight year period
that I visited his house for practice (as opposed to his other two
standard flutes which developed several large cracks and had to be sent off
for repairs).
