Date: Fri May 30 2003 - 17:36:53 PDT

Dr. Riley Lee, Shakuhachi Master and Dai-Shihan, graces the Bay Area
with his presence in June. In addition to a concert at Clarion Music,
there are a number of events that shakuhachi enthusiasts will want to
attend. From private and group lessons, to a potluck gathering of
shakuhachi aficionados, these events provide the perfect warm-up to
the Boulder Summer Camp (for those fortunate enough to be attending)
or a reasonable, albeit abbreviated, version thereof (for those who
can't be in attendance, http://www.shakucamp.com/ ).

See http://www.komuso.com/Riley_2003.html for latest details and a
map to the slightly hard to find Naka 9 Studio.

Riley Lee began playing the shakuhachi (bamboo flute) in Japan in 1971,=20
studying with Chikuho Sakai until 1980, and has been a student of=20
Katsuya Yokoyama since 1984.

Riley completed his BA and MA degrees in music at the University of=20
Hawai'i, and received his PhD degree in ethnomusicology from the=20
University of Sydney. His PhD dissertation topic was on the Zen=20
repertoire of the shakuhachi. He was an East-West Center grantee in=20
1985-1986 and a Japan Foundation fellow in 1988-1989. He was made=20
Honourary Fellow of the University of Western Sydney in 1997.

He has been instrumental in creating a professional presence of=20
traditional Japanese music in Australia. He has introduced the=20
shakuhachi to a diverse audience as both a soloist and with other=20
performers of such instruments as harp, =91cello, saxophone, tabla,=20
guitar, didjeridu, and symphony orchestra. He helped found the=20
Australian Shakuhachi Society in 1996. His request in 1988 to the Sawai=20
Koto School in Japan that a koto player be sent to Australia facilitated=20
the immigration to Australia of talented Satsuki Odamura. In 1995, he=20
also co-founded with Ian Cleworth, Australia=92s dynamic Japanese festiva=
l=20
drum group, Taikoz.

In 1998, he founded world music group Con Spirit Oz, featuring music for=20
shakuhachi, didjeridu, percussion and guitar. Its debut performance at=20
the Sydney Opera House in 1999 received rave reviews. He performed with=20
the Sydney Dance Company in the 1999 Australian season of Graham=20
Murphy=92s Air and Other Invisible Forces, touring USA at the end of 2000=
=20
and Europe in 2001 with this production.

He has made nearly forty commercially released recordings since 1980,=20
which are sold worldwide on a number of labels.

Riley was most recently seen, with five other musicians, on an=20
internationally televised programme, ushering in the new millennium on=20
New Year=92s morning at dawn, from the top of the =91sails=92 of the maje=
stic=20
Sydney Opera House - quite an auspicious start for the next 1000 years=20
for shakuhachi enthusiasts worldwide.
