I am pleased to announce the upcoming Shakuhachi events in Seattle this
Fall:
AUGUST:
Peter Hill will be visting on the weekend of 8/23 & 8/24 to teach shakuhachi
before returning to
Japan. Peter studied Dokyoku extensively and has studied with Yokoyama
Katsuya and Kakizakai Kaoru.

specify your interest or pieces you wish to work on.
Peter will also have a handfull of shakuhachi from Japan for any who are
interested.
SEPTEMBER:
Honkyoku Enbu (Offering) by Alcvin Takegawa Ramos
September 6, 6 pm at the TSUBAKI GRAND SHRINE OF AMERICA

Enjoy a night of classical Zen solo bamboo flute music from Vancouver's
Alcvin Ramos in the beautiful natural setting of TSUBAKI GRAND SHRINE OF
AMERICA. (the US Branch of Japan's oldest Shinto Shrine). The ENBU
(performance) will follow the Tokubetsu Kigan (special Shinto Purification
Prayer for the artist and all in attendance) and the offering of the Sacred
Dance.
Donations are generously wecome.
Tax deductible donations will go to Tsubaki America Shrine and Vancouver
Shakuahchi Festival Society.
Shakuhachi Workshop on Yamagoe
September 7, 9am at the TSUBAKI GRAND SHRINE OF AMERICA Kaikan

Alcvin will be giving a workshop on the honkyoku Yamagoe (a.k.a Reiho, Bo
Saji, Shin Saji).
Tuition: $50.00 per person. Private lessons are also available to those
interested. History of the piece, blowing techniques, and a line by line
breakdown of how to play the piece will be practiced and discussed. Please
bring a pencil. Booklets will be supplied.

a slot.
OCTOBER:
Phil Gelb will be performing at the "polestar Music Gallery" on October 16,
2003. Aside from that, Phil will offer private lessons on whatever the
students are working on and group lessons on the following subjects...
honkyoku
sankyoku
folk songs
improvisation
japanese music theory
Private Lessons are $30-$40 (sliding scale) per hour. Phil is also willing
to teach a group lesson at the rate of $20 for each person. If anyone is

For lessons with any of our guest senseis above, it'd be great if you could
contact us as early as possible to help us plan for the event in the most
efficient way as possible.
