Hi Folks,
I've been playing shakuhachi for a long time but don't belong to any
particular school. Like Phil, I specialize in contemporary music.
Unlike Phil, I don't know a lot about honkyoku music.
But, I've started making shakuhachi recently, and I have to say that
though my current approach is pretty intuitive, that intuition has
been helped immensely by carefully reading Nelson's many essays on
various aspects of shakuhachi acoustics. Most of the information he
has up on his site it right on target.
I'd also like to say that the thing that's made it possible for me to
make a few good flutes, is that I've become a decent player. Without
being a rather good player, a maker has no way to intelligently
evaluate his creation. Once you're a good enough player to take
advantage of the difference between a merely good and a great
instrument, you have a chance. And from that point, the information
that the instrument building theorists have will be very useful
indeed.
