Ok.. I'm a newbie to this mailing list so please forgive me if I ask too =
many questions that are repeated here. I did read through a lot of =
archives and picked up answers to many questions but still have a few.
I have just started taking lessons here in Portland, Oregon and am =
pleased with the (very) slow progress being made. I crafted a PVC =
shakuhachi following the design shown in Carl Abbott's book "Blowing =
Zen" and according to my teacher it is .. 'playable'. However, I'm =
interested in finding a bamboo shakuhachi to learn on. I've done =
extensive searching on the web and am aware of Monty Levenson's student =
shakuhachi but not had any luck finding one that I can afford at this =
time as I'm on a very limited buget (twins in college!) I'm hoping I =
may find a used 1.8 that someone might be willing to contribute to the =
cause and sell one for a 'low" price. Also if there is a shakuhachi in =
need of repair I'm very handy with wood and other crafts and would =
welcome the chance to reclaim one.
In fact, in addition to learning to play I am also very serious about =
learning to make shakuhachi. I have a couple of sources of bamboo and =
have begun experimenting with flutes as well as other art/crafts using =
this wonderful material! I'm looking for as much information as I can =
to help me learn construction methods. I understand it is advisable to =
know how to play before making a shakuhachi but would like to attempt =
learning both simultaneously. I can always get my teacher to provide a =
judgement on any prototypes I make. If anyone on this list knows of =
good information sources available for making shakuhachi or better yet, =
someone who makes them in this area that I might be able to meet I would =
greatly appreciate a reply. =20
Thanks!
~carlos
