Don't they still use lacquer in painting cars?=20
Apparently not. The custom paint shops tell me they do not use it. =
I have not even been able to find two-part Dupont Imron for a =
substitute!
Auto supply center?
Absolutely not. I tried 6 or 8 of them, and the only lacquer they =
sell - if it is lacquer at all - is the 1/2 oz touchup bottles for $3 =
each. But it probably is not lacquer anyway.
I used to work in an auto parts store eons ago, and I think they =
still use lacquer for custom work. Could be it still comes in clear or =
red or black.=20
My wife and I have tried for months without avail.
THE ONLY SUPPLIER I could find is www.restorersupplies.com and I =
bought four 2 oz bottles of their "Lacquer Pint Magenta" at $5/oz! And =
I have it lying on my desk in front of me right this moment. But is it =
lacquer?
The actual page for their "lacquer" is =
http://pages.restorersupplies.com/5943/InventoryPage/1315341/1.html
Is it from the urushi tree?
ANOTHER THING: Monty Levenson does not use lacquer on his =
shakuhachi, in places where he tells the public it is lacquer. He sent =
a bottle of his "urushi" to me, and I also have it here in my hand. And =
his label says, "SIMULATED Urushi Lacquer". And it is PRECISELY the =
same color as the "lacquer" I bought from restorers, the bottles are =
similar and the labels and label printing are identical. I would wager =
anything Monty is getting his SIMULATED lacquer from restorers, just =
like I did. But is it urushi lacquer. If it were, Monty would say so.
Bottom line - I do not believe it is possible to buy urushi or =
lacquer in America, but I was hoping someone would tell me I am wrong.
Oh, I want to pick up my new shakuhachi and play - but Dorothy's =
asleep again. Her sleep is definitely and rudely cutting in on my =
shakuhachi playing!
