Nishimura Koku passed away just a year or two ago. There is a page on =
him at http://www.komuso.com/people/Nishimura_Koku.html ... somehow I =
think you'll enjoy his music, Brett. Some people who are very musically =
inclined may not like his playing, but others may find it enjoyable in a =
meditative way (it's low, slow and deep from the hara). The CD called =
"Kyotaku" was available from Hogaku Journal in Japan (at least, a few =
years ago; not sure about now), but curiously, if I recall, it was =
produced in Denmark. I have one of Nishimura-sensei's "kyotaku" =
shakuhachi, but it's only about 2.3 shaku long. It's thick, cracked (and =
bound) all over, and the bore is quite wide. The back of the mouthpiece =
is shaved down a fair bit. It's certainly among the most unique =
shakuhachi I've ever owned.

detailed instructions for Kyorei for me... for an old slow learner like =
myself it is a lifetime project, but the piece really seems to penetrate =
to the core... speaking strictly as a listener, of course... as a player =

TSU-RE-RI-I-TSU_MERI-RO I lose it... and just keep playing RO-RO-RO.... =
ah well, silly old goat... braying in the wind...)
Does anyone know about Nishimura Koku-sensei and the long shakuhachi =
he called kyotaku? I have never heard a recording of his music and =
wonder about him...
