Tuners are useful but should not be given shamanic status. Several =
caveats come to mind about intonation. Temperature can be a significant =
variable. At this time of year my studio tends to be cold. This causes =
my pitch to be flatter than usual so I sometimes need a reality check in =
a warmer locale. Some notes in shakuhachi music don't fit precisely =
into the western system. Shall we start another thread about tsu no =
meri? Some notes SHOULD be "out of tune". Consult your teacher. Some =
instruments play closer to the western system than others. My 2.4 isn't =
as "good" as my 2.1. This doesn't bother me much because they're both =
beautiful, though different. =20
I like to consult the tuner occasionally. I tend to play flat and the =
tuner reminds me to correct my posture and relax my embouchure. This =
improves my playing overall- my sound as well as my intonation.
In jazz, intonation can be an expressive device. Ornette Coleman said, =
"I should be able to play my D sharp sharp or my D sharp flat when I =
want to". Might it be the same for honkyoku?

Thanks to everyone who recommended their favorite tuner.
Playing with a tuner is a humbling experience, like having a tireless
teacher in my face, giving a thumbs up or down to every note--a shiny
mirror for tonal sloppiness.
It's distracting, and diverts my focus from aspects that sometimes seem
more important.
Or is tonal accuracy most important? Maybe more so when playing with =
Koto?

I occasionally use a tuner while warming up. Rarely for any extended =
period=20
of time. I have found the more I practice good technique the more =
consistent my=20
sound has become.=20
I know one world class performer/teacher who has said he prefers to play =
flat=20
and you should never use a tuner.=20
To a westerners ear flat is bad. But some Japanese music just grates =
against=20
my nerves because of how flat it sounds.
All the Best
