Mine have been called everything from "Sack-a-hoochie" to "Sock-o-hatchee",
mostly by the uninitiate. I generally call my flutes shakuhachi in reply to
questions about it because the first contact should engender the information
and respect deserved. I also call mine shaks among the intimate initiate. My
wife calls them wonderful!
