Hello everyone,

This is a note to all those planning on coming to Japan this November
to partake in the "Shakuhachi Roots" pilgrimage with the Shakuhachi
Society of BC. The itinerary has changed a bit since its inception. We
had to extend the stay in Japan in order to fit in the bamboo
harvesting component which will be done with hocchiku master Atsuya
Okuda on Nov. 20 and 21. We will be spending 2 days with him in Nagano
harvesting bamboo and preparing the bamboo for making flutes. We will
meet Kinko shakuhachi master Christopher Yohmei Blasdel, student of
late national living treasure, Goro Yamaguchi, and resident of Japan
for over 30 years. We will also visit Kyoto where we will meet
shakuhachi master Yoshio Kurahashi and visit Meian-ji temple. We will
be taking a jinashi shakuhachi making workshop with master maker Kinya
Sogawa as well as a masters class with the Kokusai Shakuhachi Kenshukan
(Teruo Furuya, Kaoru Kakizakai, and Kazushi Matama) in Chichibu,
Saitama Prefecture.

Other side activities will or may include:
--visiting ancient reliquaries in Nara, the ancient capital of Japan
--visiting the oldest Shinto Shrines in Japan (Ise and Tsubaki) and
partaking in misogi (water purification)
--visiting the old center of Ninjas in Tsu, Mie-ken.
--meditating at Sojiji a major zen temple in Yokohama
--attending the Chichibu Night Festival (one of the most famous and
largest in Japan)

Please keep in mind that this schedule is relatively flexible. If you
want to alter it in any way to your needs please feel free. Otherwise
it is encouraged that everyone to stick together for group solidarity
and support, especially for those first-time visitors to Japan.

Please confirm if you will be joining the trip and if you have any
other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Also there is still room
on the trip if you know anyone else who may be interested in coming.
Please reply to ramos@dccnet.com.

Sincerely yours,

Alcvin
