In addition to *The Listening Book* and *Harmonic Experience*,
(www.metroactive.com/papers/sonoma/09.11.97/books-music-9737.html
Mathieu, pianist and composer, has written a book called *The
Musical Life*, which explores the notion that being musical doesn't
really have,
to do with knowing how to play an instrument or to sing in tune.
It is, he says, "a way of being aware, an angle of perception,
a tilt of the ear.

His books are exceptional journeys into what it is to be involved
with music as a way of life, and how to make music more a part of
life.
And his interest in Sufi Islam, mysticism, music, and the poetry
of Rumi, will make for comfortable reading for those of you interested
in the spiritual and zen aspects of the shakuhachi. But even
without that stuff, his work deserves a spot on anyone's bookshelf,
musician, shakuhachi player, or not.
