Christopher Yohmei Blasdel's award-winning book in Japanese, "Shakuhachi=20
Odessei" (Shakuhachi Odyssey), is at last translated into English as "The=20
Single Tone: A Personal Journey into Shakuhachi Music." Details and=20

The English version is tastefully produced. I particularly enjoyed the=20
photographs of Koizumi Fumio in his salad days, Chris teaching schoolgirls=
=20
in Japan, Yamaguchi Gor=F4 (Chris's teacher) in Tokyo and at the Denver=20
Shakuhachi Festival, Isamu Noguchi (Chris's friend and fellow outsider) in=
=20
Japan, etc., etc. Chris is a thoughtful and sensitive observer of Japanese=
=20
culture and of his position in it as a longtime resident foreigner and=20
h=F4gaku performer. His lyrical descriptions are deeply felt and often=
moving.
