Here's a link to a well known article re woodwinds and oils by Raymond &
Lee Dessey. Ostensibly directed to recorder players, it discusses woodwinds
and oils in general and actually mentions Japanese bamboo flutes once.
Likely it will tell You far more than You need to know about the different
oils and their use as moisture barriers. It may seem excessively technical
but it's not really --once You get used to the vocabulary.

Here's a link a site with a similar article from the Dolmetsch web site,
also directed to recorder players but discussing the properties of relevant
oils in general. Much less detail than the Dessey article.

(The Dolmetsch monograph site <http://www.dolmetsch.com/monographs.htm>
also has many articles that readers of this mail list might find
interesting regarding pitch, intonation, modes, scales, physics of
woodwinds, practice techniques, and so on. Lots of info about stuff that
frequently shows up on this list)

Finally, here's a site that discusses oils, humidity, and cracks in flutes
and their causes

In the end it seems to come down to this: There are MANY options for
oiling, pick one and stick to it -or not.
