Some players use a rubber finger cot on the supporting
thumb. The increased friction reduces the amount of
pressure needed to maintain the flute in position. Or,
one can stick on a small piece of rubber (or even a
"crook") in the right place on the bamboo. In any case,
the lateral pressure on the thumb due to the flute's
weight can take some getting used to.
