Let me apologize in advance to some who may feel this message is
inappropriate for the shakuhachi list. That being said, he it goes:
As many of you may know, I have been an advocate for a Veronza
Bowers, Jr., a shakuhachi player who has served 31 years in U.S.
federal prison. I have been active in his efforts to win parole for
the last seventeen years.
To make a long story short, after being recommended for parole three
times and shot down at the very last minute (literally) by the
National Commission, Veronza's final chance at Mandatory Parole is
presently being considered of the U.S. Parole Commission, a
five-member body comprised of presidential appointees. I am
coordinating a last-ditch letter writing campaign on his behalf with
hopes that it may influence the decision of this board. Many
shakuhachi players around the world have been in touch with Veronza
and support our efforts to win his release.
If you are interested in helping out by writing a letter of support,
please get back to me and I will send more information. To learn more
about Veronza, check out his web site at http://www.veronza.org
Sorry to burden you with something that is both political and
controversial, but it's our last shot at something many of us feel is
very important.
All the best,
Monty
