The texts he chose for his songs and his 'Essays Before a Sonata' will give you some
choice nuggets of his (verbal and political) thinking. A professor of mine once accused
him of jingoism, and then there's the famous quotation about people with 'sissy' ears who
can't stand modern music... But he also had quite a sentimental streak, and a mystical
streak, and probably many other streaks - he was as complex as the next guy.
