Re: [Shaku] The moldy shakuhachi syndrome

I have never encountered any mold in the bore of a ji-ari (filled and
lacquered) shakuhachi that has been consistently wiped with a
tsuyutoshi after playing. Most of the mold seems to go for the area
around the root-end, especially on those flutes that don't have the
rhizomes trimmed closely to the body of the flute.

Growth also occurs commonly in ji-nashi flutes, especially those that
don't have any urushi in the bore.

I have used walnut oil from time to time, and if it's wiped very well
after application, I've seen no problems. The preferred traditional
oil is Camelia oil--don't know where it's derived from.
Unfortunately, it only seems to be available in Japan, and it's
pricey.

I can't imagine why one would ever oil the bore of a ji-ari
shakuhachi. After all, the reason for oiling in the first place is to
reduce moisture loss (and it looks nice, too)--this is already
accomplished by the urushi applied to the bore of a filled shakuhachi.
