Dear James,
I suggest you contact Yoshio Kurahashi, as he is very comfortable with
non-Japanese visiting Kyoto, is a native of Kyoto, a very nice man, not
mention a shakuhachi master! He can help you with getting entrance into
Meian-ji. Kyoto is the center for Tozan-ryu so you can study with
various Tozan masters like Myoshi Genzan. Also Kyoto is also the home
of Clifton Karhu, shakuhachi player and famous woodblock print master
who has lived in Kyoto since 1955. You can visit the Kitahara family of
shakuhachi makers in Kyoto and you can travel to Nara to visit
Yamaguchi Shugetsu, who makes awesome shakuhachi which I recommend to
everyone. In Osaka, there are the fine teachers, Yoshinobu Taniguchi
and Toshimitsu Ishikawa, and the fine maker Ichijo Kobayashi.
Please contact me for contact informations of any of the above
mentioned people and places.
Have a a great trip,
Alcvin
