On Saturday March 25 I will be leading a shakuhachi intensive in
Portland (Maine). This will be a day of playing and learning about
shakuhachi for New England students at all levels. The tentative
schedule is:
10 - 10:30 Ro-buki (playing one note for long full breaths)
10:30 - 11:30 Breathing and meditation class, including prana yoga for
shakuhachi
11:30 - 12 First semi-private lesson (2 or 3 students at about the same
level)
12 - 12:30 Second semi-private lesson
12:30 - 1 Third semi-private lesson
(during these three lesson times students may grab lunch - there are
many restaurants very close)
1 - 2 Technique Class (breath work, embouchure, meris, posture, etc.)
2 - 3 Group playing: honkyoku and duets that can be played as a group
3 - 4 Technique Class 2 (koro koro, tamane, muraiki, etc.)
4 - 5 Open-ended Q&A
5 - 7 Solo and duet performances by students plus 45 minute solo
performance by Nyokai.
This schedule may change a bit, but I will make sure that the day is
appropriate for all levels from complete beginners to advanced. This is
a good opportunity to cover some areas that don't always come up in
private lessons as well as to learn from fellow students.
The charge is $80 for the day if paid in advance (by March 15) or $90 if
paid the day of the workshop.
There are a limited number of spaces available, so please let me know
ASAP if you can make it.
