Below are some descriptions of workshops I will be giving in Northern=20
California, Southern Oregon, and Northern Washington this summer in=20

Morning workshop: This workshop will address the most basic and=20
important
techniques in producing the best sound for shakuhachi playing: sesame=20
seed embouchure,
cartoon kiss, and noodle to the sky! Additional basics: posture, earth=20=

breathing, ping pong
ball mouth, RO BUKI, and yuri-jutsu. This is ideal for raw beginners=20
and anyone
who wants to improve their sound. If we have time I will begin teaching=20=

the beautiful basic
honkyoku piece, Honshirabe. Notation will be provided

For those who do not have a flute I will provide student flutes to use.

7/22 Morning workshop/lecture: This workshop will address the
relationship between making a hocchiku shakuhachi and playing,
as well as the importance of being connected with Japan and
traditional aesthetics and playing honkyoku. I will talk about my
experiences in harvesting and visiting sacred sites in Japan, and
demonstrate the making of a hocchiku. Also, I will teach techniques
for blowing hocchiku and teach the wonderful piece, Neri Saji
(Daibosatsu). Notation will be provided.
