This 21-member group of monks from the Tendai school in Japan provides the
New York audience with a rare opportunity to hear shomyo, one of the world's
oldest musical forms. Originating in India, these Buddhist chants
traveled through China before taking root in Japan. They have been preserved
by the Tendai school, which is now celebrating its 1,200th year. Shomyo has
been highly influential on Japanese musical forms ranging from classical
music for the Noh theatre to popular music, and is the major source of
Japanese vocal music. Shomyo Buddhist chant reached its zenith in the 12th
to 14th centuries and has recently received renewed international attention.
