Greetings.
The next World Shakuhachi Festival 2008 will be held in Sydney, 4-8 =20
July 2008. I have taken the liberty of compiling a mailing list of =20
people who might be interested in and/or who might know someone =20
interested in the Festival. If you do not want any more information =20
about the Festival, please let me know, and we'll take your name off =20
the list.
Alternatively, if you know of anyone who might also be interested in =20
WSF08, please, please! forward this email onward.
The WSF08 website is up and running, thanks to Rob Morris. Though far =20=
from completed, it has all of the latest information about the =20
Festival. Also now on line is the official website for the Shakuhachi =20=
Composition Competition, designed and run by Andrew MacGregor. With =20
combined cash prizes of AUS$6000.00, this competition is set to =20
become a major event in the Festival.
The website addresses are:
www.worldshakuhachifestival08
www.shakuhachichambermusic.com
Also, those of you with websites, please add links to the above =20
websites to them. Many thanks.
Below are the highlights of the World Shakuhachi Festival 2008.
Best regards,
Riley Lee

WORLD SHAKUHACHI FESTIVAL
DATES: 4-8 July 2008
VENUES in SYDNEY AUSTRALIA:
Sydney Conservatorium of Music (see website details of venues)
City Recital Hall at Angel Place (capacity 1200, two evening concerts)
Sydney Opera House Studio (capacity 300, one evening concert, TBC)
TENTATIVE SCHEDULE;
4 July - registration in afternoon, special TaikOz concert from 8pm =20
at Angel Place, featuring taiko and shakuhachi
5-8 July - concerts, workshops, etc., 10am - 6.30pm at Sydney =20
Conservatorium of Music (SCM)
SPECIAL EVENTS
5-6 July - evening concerts at Verbrugghan Hall and SOH Studio Space =20
(TBC)
6 July 3.15pm Composition Competition Concert, Verbrugghan Hall (see =20
below)
7 July - 8pm Main WSF08 Public Concert at City Recital Hall at Angel =20
Place
7 July after main concert - reception
8 July - 8pm Farewell Banquet
With six venues available to us under one roof, the Festival will be =20
able to schedule, if needed, over 70 events over four days. =20
Consequently, though nothing can be promised until the final =20
schedules are made, it seems quite possible to accommodate nearly =20
everyone who would like to perform at least one piece during the =20
Festival.
In other words, the Festival will try to guarantee a spot on at least =20=
one concert for anyone who has a piece to play, including a number of =20=
low pressure, performer friendly 'open mic' concerts. On the other =20
hand, as there may be up to five venues being used concurrently, =20
capacity audiences can't be guaranteed.
LETTERS OF INTENT, INVITATION, RECOMMENDATION, ETC
One of the ramifications of the above is that it is now possible for =20
WSF08 to provide letters of intent, invitations, and recommendations =20
for most people requesting these to be used in funding applications, =20
subject to approval by the WSF08 organising committee. Official WSF08 =20=
letterheads, with new WSF08 logo are ready for use. Please send all =20
requests for such letters to riley@rileylee.net. Requests for =20
multiple applications will be accepted.
In your requests, please be concise, but as complete as possible, =20
including everything you need us to say to maximise your chances of =20
being funded, how to address the letter/s, where to send the letter/=20
s, and what format is necessary (eg, email or printed letter). You =20
might like to draft the letter for us, which we may rewrite in our =20
own words. WSF08 will, as soon as possible, either send you an =20
official letter for your application, or will let you know if there =20
is any problem in doing so.
We realise that deadlines for these applications are in many cases =20
imminent, and will endeavour to provide you with these letters asap.
KOTO/SHAMISEN PARTICIPATION
A number of concerts both featuring and merely including koto and/or =20
shamisen will be scheduled throughout WSF08. A special registration =20
fee for koto and shamisen players will enable performers of these =20
instruments to perform in at least two concerts, to access rehearsal =20
rooms, and to attend all major concerts held in the evenings.
SPECIAL ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS STREAM
The 'Absolute Beginner' or AB stream has been one of the most =20
successful parts of recent Australian Shakuhachi Festivals. Total =20
beginners, some having never held a shakuhachi before or heard one =20
played live will be able to attend workshops especially for =20
beginners, receive individual instruction, borrow or buy instruments =20
and attend all concerts, all for a special AB registration fee.
WORKSHOPS, LECTURES
Workshops on topics such as performing and practice techniques, =20
making and choosing instruments, learning specific pieces, learning =20
different notation systems, etc, will be scheduled throughout the =20
FESTIVAL. The FESTIVAL will also feature a number of special academic =20=
and more general lectures presented by specialists from Japan and =20
elsewhere.
SPECIAL RATES FOR SPOUSES, PARTNERS, FRIENDS
A special registration fee for people would like to come to Sydney =20
during WSF08, but are not necessarily interested in performing or =20
attending the daytime events. This type of registration would include =20=
attendance to all evening concerts, and be eligible for any special =20
discounts for airfare and accommodation.
SHAKUHACHI CHAMBER MUSIC COMPOSITION COMPETITION
Andrew MacGregor's suggestion of a WSF08 composition competition has =20
been universally applauded. Andrew has worked out the details of this =20=
competition and will soon have available the official rules, =20
application forms, etc.. A separate website devoted entirely to this =20
Competition can be found at www.shakuhachichambermusic.com. The =20
Competition will be an open one for new works for chamber ensemble =20
which must feature the shakuhachi and other typically European 'art =20
music' instruments, to be decided.
Cash prizes totaling A$6000 will be awarded to the three finalists.
WEBSITE
The English versions of the websites have been created. The Japanese =20
versions should be up and running by the end of this month.
AIR TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION
The Festival has engaged a travel agent in Australia who specialises =20
in taking care of the needs of touring ensembles, and large groups =20
from Japan and the USA. It is hoped that WSF08 will be able to offer =20
special group airfare and accommodation rates. Airfare and/or =20
accommodation can be booked through the WSF08 travel agent or booked =20
individually. Ample accommodation can be found within walking =20
distance from the SCM venue ranging from five-star to backpacker/=20
dormitory style. Registrants may choose to pay only the Festival =20
registration fee.
ESTIMATED COSTS:
Participants will be able to book package deals that will include =20
airfare, accommodation and registration, or pay only registration fees.
There may be a number of types of registrations. Possible types of =20
registrations:
Full registration: A$520 (=A550000), plus $50 for farewell dinner.
Koto/shamisen registration: A$315 (=A530000)
AB registration: $250 (=A524000)
Spouse/friend registration: A$160 (=A515000)
It is estimated that the typical cost for a participant coming from =20
Japan, including airfare and above average accommodation will be =20
=A5250,000.
PLEASE HELP!!!
Word of mouth (including 'word of internet') is our most important =20
publicity tool! It is up to all of you to make this event happen, =20
and to make WSF08 a success!! Please forward this and subsequent =20
emails about WSF08 to EVERYONE who might be even vaguely interested.
For further information, please email me.
Sincerely,
Riley Lee
