Hi Jeremy,
I've experimented with epoxy resins, polyester resins, synthetic
lacquers, enamel, oil and water based paints. One coating I haven't
tried is shellac. George Miller mentioned that he's had good luck with
that coating. Of the ones I've used, all were very close if not
identical in brightening up the tone (as long as the thickness was the
same).
I'm open to other materials that may come along, but for now I like to
use urushi mostly because it's more enjoyable to work with than the
others. I like the scent and appreciate the quality of the better
Japanese brands.
