Justin,
I realize the difficulty in making flutes to balance so many factors, but
for me as far as shakuhachi is concerned timbre has primacy. Timbre I think is
determined by the type of bamboo and its density and the curing process
among other things maybe... I am not an expert and so I don't really know. Even
so, timbre is for me the most determing factor. A flute with perfect pitch
and possibilities of loud playing, responsive, etc. but with a common, bright
more compact sound, or a simple sound, just isn't worth having.... the sound
itself has to give of itself, has to have that something special... I can't
really explain it... I can't explain in words what is a kind of sound.
As to players with a more "Japanese" sound...there is Aoki Reibo, Tadashi
Tajima, Yoshikazu Iwamoto, Ketsuke Zenyoji....as are some, but there are many
others too.
