[Shaku] Removing cashew

Hello everyone,
I have been asked to restore a very messy shakuhachi. It seems to have been covered in cashew paint, the urushi substitute. Does anyone have any experience with removing this? Is there any substance we can use to make it soft? I was thinking maybe paint stripper, or perhaps even "cashew thinner"? I would be grateful to hear from anyone.
