Bubbleeconomies have one long-term insidious effect. They
helpmanagement forget about the often difficult problem of
continuityand top people successions. This is a pattern we saw in
Japan,which is hurting the economy right now, and we expect the
samewill be true in China in 20 years if there is no
furtherconsolidation. The phenomenon is exacerbated by
populationgeographic and social mobility, as regional centres and
secondaryeconomies lose key talents to capitals. The pattern is often
thatsuccessful parents can afford to send their children to the
bestuniversities. The kids in turn find good positions in the
biggestcorporations, and have no desire to return to the
familybusinesses when parents retire. This compounds the problems
ofsmall and medium businesses in regional economies. M&A is away to
avoid closing down the business. We see few companiespro-actively
planning for succession, although they might oftensome advantages to a
new management such as quickly increasingresponsibilities, good
work-life balance plans, and a betteroverall life-style. Some huge
companies have made successionsplanning a core competency, such as
GE. Softbank also is beingvery systematic at preparing replacement to
Mister Son, with anacademy and a roaster of 30 candidates. By the way,
today is thelast day to apply if you want to lead Softbank in the
future.
