DEC and ATT's early contributions

I remember those of us at the tail end of the Path lines used to hear
rumors of DECVAX's monthly phone bill being in the five figures. It was
justified because it was good for DEC to have an active Unix presence.

Rick Adams used to run Seismo's phone bill up to the four figures, I
think. Seismo pumped a lot of news, but was better known as everyone's
favorite mail gateway. I don't remember how Rick justified the phone bill
-- just "general connectivity helps us do our work"? I also remember
when Rick found out about PC Pursuit...

Of course, we were pretty much all in awe of ihnp4, held together by Gary
and Co. I remember getting email explaining that their policy was "we'll
call anyone." Of course, they were the phone company. :-)

The other backbone sites had hefty phone bills too, but those three
seemed to have the best reputation for the largest number of connections.
(The Jersey crew, allegra et al, seemed to be a bit more selective in
who they would talk to.)

My recollection,
