W.A. Mathieu has a very interesting chapter on long tones in his book, The
Musical Life, Reflections on What It Is. His other book is also very helpful
The Listening Book. They are unusual books and have great depth as Mathieu
trained with Sufis who use music as part of spiritual practice just as the
old shakuhachi players did. Long tones provide an especially good place to
start this kind of attitude in playing.
