Hans,
I have used, and seen used by others the simple method of winding over the
starting end of the cord then pulling the finished end under the windings.
his is the method used on the windings on fishing rods and is quite easy to
do.

I use a heavy piece of monofiliment fishing line tied in a loop and tucked
under the start of my binding along with the free end. I wind all my turns of
thread over this loop then tuck the final end into it and draw it out from
where I started pulling the end of the thread under the bindings. This holds
quite well and an unobtrusive spot of instant glue keeps it from working
loose later.

Best,
Tony Miller
