Baka is not the equivalent of sh**. It means something more along the lines of
"dumbhead" in standard Japanese and doesn't really have much of an edge. -Chan
is a diminutive or endearing form of -San. Nelson's usage is perfectly
appropriate in context, and nothing to get excited about.
