Reg,

Ah thanks, just the ticket... I notice he also has a CD named Fuke Shu
Honkyoku; Kyorei the listing is interesting but doesn't list KYOREI as one
of the pieces... is there actually a recording of Kyorei out there by
Nishimura Koku? I also found the notes on Ajikan from both his CD's quite
interesting: http://www.komuso.com/pieces/Ajikan_(Itchoken).html "seeing
the original sound", indeed! Perhaps I will expand my listening repetoire a
bit...

I wonder about this kyotaku you describe, is it customary for master players
to "customize" flutes so radically?

Gashos,

Nishimura Koku passed away just a year or two ago. There is a page on him at
http://www.komuso.com/people/Nishimura_Koku.html ... somehow I think you'll
enjoy his music, Brett. Some people who are very musically inclined may not
like his playing, but others may find it enjoyable in a meditative way (it's
low, slow and deep from the hara). The CD called "Kyotaku" was available
from Hogaku Journal in Japan (at least, a few years ago; not sure about
now), but curiously, if I recall, it was produced in Denmark. I have one of
Nishimura-sensei's "kyotaku" shakuhachi, but it's only about 2.3 shaku long.
It's thick, cracked (and bound) all over, and the bore is quite wide. The
back of the mouthpiece is shaved down a fair bit. It's certainly among the
most unique shakuhachi I've ever owned.
